Zaonezhie: a sanctuary where nature reigns supreme

Thirteen scenic-view rooms and four guest houses with wood-burning fireplaces. A restaurant helmed by a chef from Moscow. An event hall overlooking the lake. A pier and forest trails that wander through the taiga.

Everything you need for deeply comfortable rest—in the middle of nowhere. Just an hour from the Kizhi UNESCO Heritage Museum, surrounded by the raw northern beauty and hundreds of lakes.

Inspired by the expressive elegance of Chilean landscape hotels, Rhizome studio embraced unexpected forms and artisanal craftsmanship. Staying true to Karelian traditions, our primary material is northern wood—textured by hand, shaped by village artisans.

Even the facade’s shingles pay homage to the region’s heritage: echoing the domes of historic churches, each one hand-hewn by local carpenters using an axe.

We embrace variety over repetition. Smooth, modern lines live beside raw textures and natural imperfections. Beds hewn from logs, unpolished timber surfaces, and soot-colored shungite fireplaces—stone found only in Zaonezhie—reveal the soul of the north.

Embedded in the details: the patterns of Zaonezhie embroidery and Karelian runes, quiet reminders of our origins and ancestral echoes.

Our hotel stretches along the lakefront so that every window captures space and stillness. The central house—crowned with a green roof—blends into the landscape, never interrupting the view. Soft hills around each cottage cradle quiet courtyards, holding silence like a gentle breath.

Scattered stones across the terrain echo an old tradition: springtime boulders pushed up from the fields, gathered together. Through these thoughtful gestures, we weave together wild nature, mindful comfort, and the deep-rooted culture of Zaonezhie.
